IPA Nature/Flowers winner!

International Photography Awards 2023

The cobweb houseleek (Sempervivum arachnoideum) is a little succulent plant that looks somewhat extra-terrestrial when viewed up close. Its name is derived from the cobweb-like substance that can cover its leaves. These are monocarpic plants, meaning they die after flowering. And maybe for this reason it is relatively rare to see them flowering!

This image is focus stacked from 160 shots at slightly different focal points for deep focus through a macro lens. I find the detail fascinating, from the tiny coronets within the flower to the somewhat bristly appearance up close. These small flowers are just 20mm wide but look truly remarkable when magnified as a fine art print.

Archival pigment print on smooth matt Hahnemühle Photo Rag 308 gsm heavyweight art paper.
